  • You’ve tried outpatient therapy and/or medication and it hasn’t been enough
  • You have commercial insurance (Premera, Regence, BCBS, Cigna, UHC, Anthem, and 7 more — we verify for free)
  • You need more than an hour a week — you need structured, daily, round-the-clock care

This Program Is For You If:

What Is Residential Treatment?

If you’ve been managing severe depression, anxiety, trauma, or self-harm with an hour of therapy a week — and it’s not enough — that doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It means you deserve a higher level of support.

Residential treatment means you live with us. You wake up in a safe environment. You eat meals prepared by our nutrition team. You see your therapist regualrly. You’re surrounded by a clinical team of 100+ people whose entire job is helping you get better.

It’s not a hospital. It’s not a locked ward. It’s a structured, supportive environment in Bellevue, Washington — designed specifically for women — where you can finally focus on healing without the noise of everyday life pulling you back into old patterns.

We Know Where You Are Right Now

Whether you’re reaching out for yourself or someone you love — you’re here because you’re ready for something to change.

You might be dealing with some of this:

  • You’ve been in therapy for months — maybe years — and you still feel stuck. The coping skills work on good days. But the bad days are getting worse.
  • You’ve tried different medications, different therapists, maybe even an outpatient program. And you’re still waking up every morning wondering how you’re going to get through the day.
  • The anxiety isn’t just uncomfortable anymore — it’s controlling your life. Your relationships are suffering. Your work is suffering. You are suffering.
  • You’ve had thoughts you’re not comfortable telling anyone about. Or you’ve hurt yourself. And you know, deep down, that you need more help than what you’re getting.
  • You’re carrying more than anyone around you realizes — and you’re running out of ways to manage it alone.

If any of that sounds familiar — you’re not failing. You’re someone who deserves more support than an hour a week can provide.

That’s exactly what residential treatment is designed for.

Why THIRA Health Is Different

THIRA was designed from day one around the specific needs of women and gender non-conforming individuals. The environment. The clinical approach. The peer community. Everything.

Why does this matter? Research consistently shows that women heal differently in gender-specific environments. You’ll process trauma, build relationships, and practice vulnerability with people who understand your experience — in a space built entirely around how you heal best.

Built Exclusively for Women and Gender Non-Conforming Adults

DBT-focused residential programs are rare. THIRA is one of them. We practice fully adherent Dialectical Behavior Therapy following Dr. Marsha Linehan’s original framework — all four components:

Fully Adherent DBT — The Gold Standard in Evidence-Based Treatment

  • Individual therapy — weekly one-on-one with a DBT-trained therapist
  • Skills training groups — daily group sessions to learn and practice DBT skills
  • Phone and in-person coaching — real-time support when you need it, not just during sessions
  • Therapist consultation teams — clinicians hold each other accountable to deliver the highest quality care

This is the gold standard for treating depression, anxiety, trauma, BPD, and self-harm. The research behind DBT is decades deep — and at THIRA, it’s built into every part of your treatment plan.

When you’re at THIRA, you’re supported by psychiatrists, licensed therapists, registered dietitians (HAES-informed), expressive arts specialists, registered nurses, and behavioral health techs. Psychiatric medication management from day one. Nutrition support. Art therapy. Mindfulness and yoga. Family sessions.

Why THIRA Exists

Founded by Dr. Mehri Moore — Board-Certified Psychiatrist, Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, 35+ years specializing in women’s mental health. She built THIRA because women deserve a residential program designed entirely around how they heal.

Led clinically by Dr. Kathryn Korslund — trained directly under Dr. Marsha Linehan, the creator of DBT. She built THIRA’s fully adherent DBT program from the ground up.

Patient Stories

Eve K.

Thanks to THIRA, I know how to stay calm instead of exploding during hard conversations. I know how to take a step back to observe so I can use my wise mind. I know how to not take every single thing anyone says super personally. But the most helpful thing (a true godsend) is I now know how to set boundaries.

Lorelai S.

Overall the staff at Thira are awesome. You can tell they truly care about their jobs and want to help us. And yesterday I left Thira willing and sad about leaving. I didn’t think an 8 week (6-8 weeks, but I did the 8) program would change me so much, and it truly did.

Abbey R.

As an outpatient eating disorders dietitian, I have seen at least 10 clients after their discharge from THIRA over the last 1 year. Clients have all expressed positive experiences where they felt heard, cared for, and respected. THIRA continues to learn and practice Health At Every Size and use weight-neutral language at their center - something I believe to be vital for recovery and inclusion.

What Happens When You Reach Out

Taking this step feels huge. We get it. So here’s exactly what happens — no surprises.

Step 1: Talk With Our Admissions Counselors

How It Works

Call us at 425.454.1199 or fill out the form on this page. We’ll do an initial screening to make sure the program is a good fit for you — what you’re going through, what you’ve tried, and whether THIRA is the right level of care. No pressure. No commitment.

Step 2: Insurance Verification

We verify your insurance benefits for you. You’ll know exactly what’s covered before you make any decisions. If THIRA isn’t covered by your plan, we’ll tell you that too — and we’ll help you find somewhere that is.

Step 3: Confidential Assessment

We’ll do a full confidential assessment — a deeper conversation about your history, your diagnoses, and your goals. This is how we build a treatment plan around your specific needs so you know exactly what your days will look like before you walk through the door.

You arrive at our Bellevue campus. You meet your clinical team. And from that moment, every part of your day — therapy, skills groups, nutrition, mindfulness, family sessions — is designed to help you build a life you actually want to live.

Does my insurance cover residential treatment?

Most commercial insurance plans cover residential mental health treatment. THIRA is in-network with 13+ major carriers including Premera, Regence, BCBS, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and more. When you call or fill out the form, we verify your benefits for you — at no cost and no obligation. You’ll know exactly what’s covered before you make any decisions.
Is residential treatment really necessary? Am I overreacting?
If you’re asking this question, you’re probably not overreacting. Residential treatment is for people who need more support than weekly therapy or outpatient programs can provide. That’s not a failure — it’s a level-of-care decision.
What’s it actually like inside? Is it like a hospital?
No. THIRA is not a hospital. It’s a structured treatment environment in a residential setting in Bellevue, WA. You have your own space. You eat meals prepared by our nutrition team. Your days include individual therapy, skills groups, mindfulness sessions, expressive arts, and time with peers.
I’ve tried treatment before and it didn’t work.
That’s one of the most common things we hear. THIRA’s fully adherent DBT program is specifically designed for people who have complex presentations and haven’t responded to standard approaches.
Do you treat men?
Our residential and PHP programs are designed exclusively for women and gender non-conforming adults and teens. Gender-specific treatment creates a safer, more focused therapeutic environment — and it's one of the things that makes Thira different. For those seeking a more flexible option, select virtual IOP programs are open to all genders.
How long is the residential program?

Program length varies based on individual needs. Most residential stays range from a few weeks to several months. Insurance benefits and clinical progress both factor in.

Can you treat eating disorders alongside mental health conditions?
Yes. Many clients have co-occurring conditions. Our clinical team includes HAES-informed Registered Dietitians, and our treatment approach addresses the whole person, not just one diagnosis.
